Award-Winning Comics & Graphic Novels

lumberjanesEach year at the San Diego Comic-Con, Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are given to the best and brightest from the comic book and graphic novel genres. Known as the “Oscars of the comic world,” the Eisner awards recognize works from the year before through a variety of categories.

If you’re looking for a good comic book or graphic novel to read, stop by your nearby JMRL branch to pick up one of these winners:

Best New Series: Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters et. al.– Best friends Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley spend a fun summer at Lumberjane scout camp where they encounter yetis, three-eyed wolves, and giant falcons while solving a mystery that holds the fate of the world in the balance.

Best Continuing Series: Saga by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples – When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to raise their child in a dangerous world.

Best Reality-Based Work: Hip Hop Family Tree, Vol. 2 by Ed Piskor – Captures the history of the formative years of hip-hop as the genre transitions from parks and rec rooms to downtown clubs and vinyl records.

Best Graphic Album: This One Summer by Mariko & Jillian Tamaki – The team behind Skim presents the sumptuous graphic tale of a young teen whose latest summer at a beach lake house is overshadowed by her parents’ constant arguments, her younger friend’s secret sorrows and the dangerous activities of older teens.

Best Publication for Kids: El Deafo by Cece Bell – A poignant graphic tale based on the creator’s own experiences with hearing loss follows the adventures of young Cece, who develops “superpowers” to manage the challenges of making friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid that sometimes lets her hear things she shouldn’t. By the Geisel Honor-winning creator of Rabbit & Robot.
